JAY – School Committee members will hold a special meeting Monday to act on teacher contract terminations and requests to continue several high school courses that have fewer than 10 students.
The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. May 18 at the middle school library.
School Committee members eliminated several teaching positions at their May 7 meeting as part of a $9.7 million budget for fiscal 2009-10. The budget voters approved in April is nearly $500,000 less than the current one.
Superintendent Robert Wall said there was a process to determine which teachers would lose their jobs. He is recommending termination of the contracts as of Aug. 31 for:
• Special education teacher Christina Bamford
• Health/physical education teacher Tennie Harrington
• World language teacher Catherine Whitmore
• Science teacher Jan Collins
• Social studies teacher Jeffrey Jewel
Wall also recommends the elimination of the following positions as of June 10:
• Two six-hour educational technicians III
• One six-hour educational technician II
• One three-hour educational technician II
The board will also consider continuing high school courses that have fewer than 10 students registered. They are fashion marketing, advanced placement English literature, journalism, honors art, Rock of Ages, Spanish IV, advanced algebra, advanced trigonometry, advanced placement calculus, intermediate geometry, math I, math lab, pre-calculus, honors chemistry, library research and literature, advanced placement U.S. history and drafting II.
