AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine Gov. John Baldacci says the rewrite given to his $5.8 billion two-year general fund spending plan by the Legislature’s Appropriations Committee “strikes the right balance.”

Baldacci issued his statement early Tuesday as the committee, under the watchful eyes of legislative leaders, reached a unanimous compromise.

The package now moves to the full House and Senate. Supermajorities of two-thirds or better are needed to make its provisions effective for the July 1 start of the new budget cycle.
