WEST PARIS – A man was listed in fair condition a day after he was shot in the chest, a police sergeant said.
Lael Scott, 29, was flown to Central Maine Medical Center on Sunday afternoon. Sgt. Tim Holland of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office said Ernest Wesley, 67, of Sumner Road accidentally discharged a handgun while cleaning it in his kitchen.
“He was removing the clip from the weapon and didn’t realize it was loaded,” Holland said.
Holland said Lael was about 5 feet away when the .32-caliber handgun fired.
The Sheriff’s Office and Maine State Police investigated the shooting and found that no foul play was involved.
Lael is originally from northern Maine, but had been staying with Wesley and his wife for the past few weeks, Holland said.
