BRIDGTON – A propane leak caused an explosion that leveled a Pond Road home on Sunday afternoon, investigators said Monday.

Sgt. Joel Davis of the Maine Fire Marshal’s Office said multiple appliances in the house used propane, including the furnace and dryer. He said investigators determined that leaking gas ignited and caused the blast.

Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said investigators were unable to determine where the leak originated or what ignited the gas due to the extent of the damage. He said the explosion likely originated in the basement.

The house at 34 Pond Road was destroyed, and a garage on the property was heavily damaged by fire. The facade of a neighboring house was also damaged.

“It was pretty massive,” said Davis. “It blew out the walls.”

John Rand, the home’s owner, and another person living at the home were not injured. According to the Portland Press Herald, Rand had been walking his dog and decided to rest in a chair outside the house shortly before it exploded.

About 45 firefighters from nine towns responded to the blaze.
