AUGUSTA (AP) – Maine bicyclists may soon have to observe the same law as motorists when it comes to passing stopped school buses.

A bill that was given final Senate approval Wednesday would prohibit bicyclists from passing or overtaking a stopped school bus that has its red lights flashing. The bill also applies to operators of motorized bicycles, motorized tricycles and motorized scooters. It seeks to parallel the law as it applies to operators of other motor vehicles.

The bill was sent to Gov. John Baldacci for his signature.
