AUBURN – For every outstanding play made in the field Wednesday, the Edward Little softball team had another that wasn’t so spectacular.

The sharp defensive plays helped the Red Eddies cause, but the mistakes hurt them even more in a 4-2 loss to unbeaten Cony.

EL made six errors and allowed three unearned runs, squandering an early 2-0 lead.

“When you play a good team, you’ve got to make the routine plays,” said EL coach Elaine Keene. “We didn’t execute the routine plays. Give credit to Cony because they put the ball in play and forced us to have to think.”

Chelsea Soule led the Rams (12-0) with three hits and two runs scored. Chelsea Arbour and Liz Barker each added a pair of hits while Jasmin Trott and Mika Wilson combined to allow just four hits. Trott pitched the first four innings and allowed just three hits. Wilson finished the game, giving up just one hit while striking out five in three innings.

“We just tried to work inside-outside,” said Cony coach Rocky Gaslin. “We worked a lot of drops today. That was pretty effective. We discovered that in the first inning and worked on staying with it.”

EL (8-4) produced three hits in the first inning and produced the quick 2-0 lead but managed just two baserunners the rest of the way. Megan Hussar had two of EL’s four hits.

“We’ve struggled with that a little bit,” said Keene. “Against Leavitt the other day, we had three of our hits in the first inning and had two in the second inning. Then it kind of petered out after that. I don’t know if that’s because we made mistakes in the field, and we started doubting ourselves. Instead of dwelling on our mistakes if they think about how we can change those and what we can do to make those plays easier, when playoff time comes, we’ll be that much better.”

EL took a 2-0 lead in the first when an Emily Grund single scored Alyssa Levesque. Hussar followed with an RBI single that fell between Amy Jones and Arbour as the two infielder collided.

Cony got one back in the second when Arbour singled and scored on an error off an Emily Soule grounder. In the third, Soule scored off an error prompted by aggressive baserunning to tie the game. The Rams took the lead in the fifth when Sara Nims scored on a dropped Cloutier fly to center. Cony scored again in the seventh when Soule singled and scored on a Cloutier fielder’s choice.

“We stole some bases,” said Gaslin. “Our leadoff hitter scored two times. We made them throw the ball around with our speed.”

Levesque pitched well for EL, scattering nine hits. She struck out four and walked just one.

“They know how to win and we hope to win,” said Keene. “That’s the difference right now between us being that great team.”
