LISBON – A smoky kiln fire at the Knight-Celotex plant on Route 96 in Lisbon Falls late Thursday afternoon was extinguished within two hours.

One Lisbon firefighter, whose name was not released, was treated for heat exhaustion in the 90-degree weather. According to Lisbon Fire Chief P. Sean Galipeau, the Fire Department received several reports from people who spotted the blaze from the opposite side of the Androscoggin River. When firefighters arrived, there was heavy smoke and fire in the kiln. There was some damage to the kiln which is used to dry the wood fiberboard the plant manufactures, and some products were damaged, he said.

Both Lisbon Falls and E.T. Smith Hose Co. of Lisbon responded to the scene, as did one truck from Topsham. Durham filled in at the Lisbon Falls station and Lewiston filled in at the Lisbon station.
