AUGUSTA – Richard F. Conant, 82, of Winthrop, passed away after a courageous struggle with leukemia on May 19, at Maine General Medical Center.
He was born on March 25, 1927, in Turner, the son of the late Donna and Frank Conant. Dick graduated from Leavitt High School and was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran.
He was superintendent of Commonwealth Shoe in Gardiner for 15 years and later was employed as vice president of manufacturing with the Kinney Shoe Co. in Carlisle, Pa.
He was a longtime member of the Augusta Country Club, where he was an avid golfer and shared his passion of golf with his grandson, Ryan. He had a love for all outdoor activities especially hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and boating. He truly loved life and his kindness and generosity will be remembered by all.
He is dearly missed by his wife, Lorraine; his three daughters, Sally Hanley and her husband, Jeffery, of Pittston, Elaine Hockridge and her husband, Brian, of Peoria, Ill., and Carol Gay and her husband, Timothy, of Pittston; six grandchildren, Jana Christman, Abraham Hanley, Emily Clark, Jeffery Hanley, Eric Hockridge and Ryan Gay; six great-grandchildren, brothers, Roger Conant and Merton Conant; sisters, Thelma Nickerson, Verna Hathaway and Cleo Sopka and a twin sister, Lee Moody.
His family wishes to thank the staff of the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care as well as the loving care he received from the staff of the Oncology Department at the Maine General Medical Center.
