SOUTH PORTLAND (AP) – The Coast Guard says a man has been rescued from Maine’s Burnt Porcupine Island after his first ocean-kayaking trip.
Officials said 31-year-old Jason Munley of Pittsburgh set out Thursday for a 10.5-mile trip from Hancock Point to Bar Harbor.
He didn’t arrive when expected and a group of friends started looking for him on shore. Around 10 p.m., they flagged down a lifeboat crew from Coast Guard Station Southwest Harbor. The lifeboat crew and another Coast Guard boat crew were joined by a helicopter from Air Station Cape Cod, and Bar Harbor police and the Rockport harbormaster assisted.
Munley’s light was spotted around 11:30 p.m. and the helicopter crew flew in to get him.
