BANGOR – The Maine Sports Hall of Fame will honor local high school athletes Abby Downs of Edward Little High School and Mary Lewis of St. Dominic Regional High School at its 34th annual awards banquet May 31 at Bangor Motor Inn.
Each of 10 athletes will receive a $1,500 scholarship. More than $300,000 in scholarships have been distributed since the hall establishe the awards in the mid-1970s. Candidates are nominated by their respective schools.
Downs has been a KVAC all-star in soccer, basketball and outdoor track. She ranks ninth in a senior class of 235 students with an average over 95. She will attend Endicott College and plans to become a nurse.
Lewis has earned 11 letters in three sports at St. Dom’s. She was Class C field hockey player of the year in the Western Maine Conference in 2008. She ranks eighth in a class of 53. Lewis will attend Bates College to study chemistry and mathematics.
Other scholarship winners are Elise Begin of Forest Hills, Wade Davis of Hall-Dale, John Gilboy of Thornton, Matt Harvey of Fort Kent, Adelene Hills of Belfast, Ryan Larochelle of Bangor, Casey Monaghan of Portland and Ryan Nadeau of Brewer. Permanent enshrinees into the hall include Cindy Blodgett, Jack Butterfield, George Hale, Robert Kelley, Sam Pendleton, Jon MacDonald, Peter McCarty, Kenneth Perrone and Dick Scott.
