BRUNSWICK (AP) – Students from 36 states, the District of Columbia and nine foreign countries have been awarded 451 degrees from Bowdoin College.

At Saturday’s commencement ceremony, college President Barry Mills told graduates that the best leaders have two qualities – a sense of humility and a sense of humor. He said good leaders leave their egos at the door, and know not to take themselves too seriously.

In keeping with a tradition that started with the school’s first graduation in 1806, commencement addresses were delivered by graduating seniors.

This year’s speakers, chosen through a competition, were Samantha Scully and Ian Yaffe.
