BARING (AP) – Two passers-by are credited by police with helping two passengers escape from a burning vehicle that crashed into a tree Saturday evening in the eastern Maine town of Baring.

But the good Samaritans were unable to rescue Nicholas White of Calais, the 16-year-old driver who was trapped inside the wreckage and died at the scene.

The Bangor Daily News quotes police as saying the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it went off Charlotte Road, hit the tree and caught fire. Trooper Jeffrey Ingemi said one girl managed to crawl out of the vehicle on her own, and passers-by helped the other two passengers make it to safety.
