AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — The Maine House has given a procedural green light for debate on an $5.8 billion state budget.
Representatives voted Tuesday morning on the general fund spending package for the coming two years. The budget includes provisions for payless shutdown days for state employees — 10 in each of the coming two years — that would save close to $14 million.
The Maine State Employees Association is encouraging members to bring their families to a State House demonstration against the budget. The revised package that extends through mid-2011 would also freeze merit pay and longevity pay for additional savings of close to $12 million more and introduce employee contributions for health insurance.
Fliers being handed out Tuesday slated the demonstration for noon on the third floor of the State House where the House and Senate meet.
