RANGELEY – A fire heavily damaged a three-story house Friday on Deer Meadow Road, a subdivision off Quimby Road, Fire Chief Rudy Davis said Tuesday.

“We’re not 100 percent sure but all indicators indicate the fire started around a snowmobile in the basement,” Davis said.

There was an attempt to start the machine earlier in the day but it wouldn’t start, Davis said.

The fire spread up through the basement to part of a first-floor wall and then up through the attic, he said.

The house is owned by Jeff Cessario of Limerick, Davis said, and it is insured. It is a second home to the family. Cessario was packing up to head back to Limerick when someone saw smoke.

There was heat and smoke damage throughout the house, some structural damage to floor joists, and the basement was completely compromised, Davis said.

About 25 firefighters from Rangeley, Eustis and Phillips responded to the fire reported at about 12:30 p.m. No one was injured.
