NEWPORT – In two starts this spring, Dylan Vining has fired two no-hitters. The Mt. Blue pitcher, however, finally earned his first win when the Cougars provided him with a bunch of runs in a 7-0 victory over Nokomis in KVAC baseball game Tuesday.
In three appearances, Vining (1-1) has allowed just one hit. He struck out seven batters Tuesday.
Alec Wallace, who led the offense with two hits, highlighted the three-run third inning with a two-run single. Shane Smith added an RBI double in the seventh when Mt. Blue (7-6) scored three times to seal the win.
Oak Hill 8, Maranacook 7
WALES – Oak Hill survived a four-run outburst by Marancook in the top of the seventh and Joe Morneault smacked a two-run single in the fifth to help give the Raiders (8-5) a slim 8-7 victory over the Black Bears (7-6).
The Raiders had built an 8-3 lead when Maranacook nearly upended Oak Hill with four runs in the seventh. But Morneault’s single gave the Raiders the edge in the end.
The Raiders’ Cody Plourde hit a two-run double and Zach Linnett added a two-run triple. The Raiders had 12 hits on the day and Cam Lebreque received the win on the mound.
Oxf. Hills 5, Lewiston 4
SOUTH PARIS – Matt Verrier smashed a solo home run in the sixth inning to propel Oxford Hills to a 5-4 victory over Lewiston.
Verrier led the Vikings (7-6) with two hits, including a two-run triple in the third. Jamie Henderson picked up the win after working the sixth inning in relief.
The Blue Devils (5-8) jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the first frame. Alex Wong and Rob Leeman led the offensive effort, combining for four hits and three RBIs.
Softball
Cony 4, Leavitt 3
AUGUSTA – Leavitt stormed back from a three-run deficit but fell short in a 4-3 defeat to unbeaten Cony in KVAC softball action Tuesday.
The Hornets (4-10) scored twice in the sixth and had two runners on base in the seventh when Cony recorded the final out to escape with the victory.
Leavitt scored the first run on Tori Zupancic’s RBI double in the third before Cony scored twice in the the third and fourth innings fot a 4-1 advantage. Abbey Randall and Adrie Newton drove home both runs in the sixth on squeeze plays.
Newton had four strikeouts in the tough-luck loss. Mika Wilson and Jasmine Trott shared mound duty for Cony.
Oxf. Hills 19, Lewiston 3
SOUTH PARIS – Oxford Hills piled up 14 runs in the second and third innings and tacked on another five in the fourth, as the Vikings dropped Lewiston with a 19-3 victory.
The Vikes (11-2) used 12 hits to overpower the Blue Devils.
Breanna Martin smacked a two-run homer for Oxford Hills and Dayna Schultz hammered out three hits. Kristy Jurczak got the win, striking out six and holding the Devils to five hits.
For Lewiston, Carley Denis tripled and singled.
EL 12, Brunswick 4
AUBURN – Edward Little erupted for nine runs in the sixth inning and went on to record a 12-4 victory over Brunswick.
Alyssa Levesque and Kayla Cummings led the Red Eddies (9-4) with two hits and two RBIs each, while Kim Lawrence belted an RBI double. Megan Hussar also contributed with a pair of hits. Miranda Martin scattered five hits and was credited with the win.
The Dragons (6-8) were paced by Emily Hartzell with two hits.
Maranacook 3, Oak Hill 0
WALES – Sarah Maxwell fired a two-hitter and struck out 16 batters with no walks to lead unbetaen Maramacook to a 3-0 triumph over Oak Hill.
Heidi Shaw had two hits, including and RBI double for the Black Bears (13-0). Taylor Fillion and Abby Goulet had the two hits for Oak Hill (6-7).
Oak Hill pitcher Lauren Hall struck out six and walked one.
Boys’ lacrosse
Lewiston 4, Messalonskee 2
LEWISTON – Devin McClellan and Craig Sirois netted goals in the second half to lift Lewiston to a 4-2 upset over Messalonskee.
Seth Mason and Erik Bonawitz also tallied for the Blue Devils (5-5) to complete the scoring. Jesse Leeman made 13 saves in net to notch the victory.
Messalonskee (8-2) received one goal each from Chris Pelletier and Nate Delguidice. Chris Delguidice turned aside three shots between the posts for the Messalonskee.
