AUGUSTA (AP) – The Maine House has approved a $5.8 billion two-year state spending plan that includes broad cuts in state programs and services as well as pay freezes and furloughs for government workers.

Representatives voted 115-31 Tuesday in favor of the bill, after rejecting several proposed amendments. The Senate on Wednesday is expected to take up the measure, which reduces spending by 8 percent compared with the current budget.

The budget is a rewrite of Democratic Gov. John Baldacci’s original proposal that won bipartisan endorsement from the Appropriations Committee. It includes provisions for 10 payless shutdown days for state employees in each of the coming two years that are estimated to save around $14 million.
