PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A coalition of labor organizations is continuing its tour of Maine in support of changes in federal laws to make it easier to form labor unions.

The tour kicked off Wednesday at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery and was continuing Thursday with a press conference and vigil in Portland in support of the Employee Free Choice Act, which is under debate in Congress. A total of 10 stops were planned across the state through the end of the month.

The Employee Free Choice Act is organized labor’s top priority this year, but business groups are opposed. It would allow a majority of workplace employees to sign cards to join a union instead of being forced to hold secret ballot elections.
