AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — The number of swine flu cases in Maine is holding steady but health officials are alarmed by the spread of the virus in nearby states.
The Maine Center for Disease Control says there are 10 confirmed or probable swine flu cases in Maine. That number reflects a decrease from earlier figures because several of the state cases were not borne out by additional testing at federal laboratories.
An advisory issued Thursday, however, warns of a troubling trend in the region, with 31 confirmed cases in New Hampshire and more than 400 confirmed cases in Massachusetts.
Twenty-seven people have been hospitalized with the infection in Massachusetts. And eight schools in Boston have now been temporarily closed due to flu problems.
