MONMOUTH – The Winthrop Red Sox spoiled the Downeast Dodgers’ first game of the Pine Tree League baseball season in resounding fashion Monday, rolling to a 21-4 victory in a six-inning affair at Monmouth Academy.

Winthrop (4-0) took advantage of several Dodgers miscues and some rusty pitching, scoring runs in every inning except the second. Downeast scored three times in the first on a pair of walks, followed by two Winthrop errors, before winning pitcher Dennis McHugh settled in. McHugh struck out three and gave up two hits in three innings of work. Torey Carr and Brett Witherell mopped up the final three innings.

Leadoff hitter Mike House led Winthrop’s attack with three hits and three runs scored. Matt Richardson, Ian McCarthy and Joe Wilson each collected a pair of hits. The Dodgers only mustered three hits on the day from Ed Crocker, Rusty Klobas and Bill Arsenault. Winthrop will host the Dixfield Diamondbacks May 31 at Winthrop High School, while the Auburn White Sox travel to Litchfield to take on the Dodgers.
