A Bradford man surrendered to state police Thursday evening after a standoff at his Main Street home that lasted more than seven hours, Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said in a statement.

Clarence Rairdon Jr., 57, surrendered at about 6:45 p.m. after the state police tactical team lobbed tear gar into his mobile home.

Rairdon came out the front door, sat on the front steps and was taken into custody, McCausland said.

A short time later he complained of chest pains and was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center by ambulance.

The standoff began at about 11:30 a.m. after a woman, who rented a room from Rairdon and who is a former girlfriend, called state police to say he was intoxicated and had threatened her with an axe, McCausland said.

She left the home as state police cordoned off the area and called for assistance from members of the tactical team and negotiators.

During the afternoon, the woman reported that Rairdon had called her and told he might use explosives or start a fire inside his home. That threat caused police to widen their police lines for public safety, McCausland said.

Negotiators later talked to Rairdon on the telephone attempting to get him to surrender, but without success. Late in the afternoon, the decision was made to use tear gas, McCausland said.

About 25 state troopers responded to the incident, he said.

Bradford is northwest of Old Town in Penobscot County.
