TURNER – The Androscoggin Land Trust will recognize National Trails Day, Saturday, June 6, with two events at the Androscoggin Riverlands, a nearly 2,600-acre parcel in Turner and Leeds that was conserved due to the efforts of the Land Trust’s founders.
National Trails Day is a day when more than a million people will celebrate trails by building, maintaining, dedicating and enjoying America’s favorite trails.
In Turner, ALT’s Jonathan LaBonte and Judy Marden will lead a four-mile hike of the Homestead Trail at the Androscoggin Riverlands. The gently graded trail is named for the remnants of eight historic farmsteads along Old River Road that were destroyed in 1927 when the Gulf Island Dam was completed. The foundations can be viewed from the trail, which also features open vistas of the Androscoggin River.
Participants should meet at 9:30 a.m., rain or shine, at the Center Bridge Road parking lot; bring lunch and water; and wear sturdy hiking shoes. Pre-registration is not required.
Also at the Androscoggin Riverlands, the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands, in partnership with ALT, will host a nine-mile walk along the Ridgeline Trail, a continuation of the Homestead Trail.
Participants should allow five to six hours, wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring water and lunch. Walkers should meet at the Center Bridge Road parking lot at 8:30 a.m. For more information, contact Kathy Eickenberg at the Bureau of Parks and Lands at 287-4963. Pre-registration is not required.
The Maine Department of Conservation, Bureau of Parks and Lands, is undertaking to develop the Riverlands into the first state park in 25 years. The Androscoggin Riverlands State Park will also be the only state park with direct access to a major population center, being located less than 10 miles from Lewiston-Auburn.
