Fans of Maine’s brew pubs will soon be able to take their favorite beers home. On Friday, Gov. Baldacci signed LD 904, allowing the state’s brew pubs to sell growlers, 64-ounce bottles of beer filled at the taps, for off-premise consumption.

“The Maine brewers will be able to better showcase their fine products, and our customers will have the freshest beer possible to take home with them,” said Geoff Houghton, owner of The Liberal Cup in Hallowell and Run of the Mill in Saco.

Houghton called the bill “an economic stimulus package that is 64 oz. and doesn’t cost the taxpayer a cent.”

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Nancy Smith, D-Monmouth, does not allow growler sales after 10 p.m., although pubs have no limit on the number of growlers they can sell. While brew pubs could already sell growlers, they had to sell them through a separate retail entrance.

The bill will go into effect 90 days after the Legislature recesses, which is scheduled for mid-June.
