LEWISTON – The Lisbon track teams didn’t just submit a down payment for Friday’s Mountain Valley Conference meet.

The Greyhounds paid in full over the course of the season but got their money’s worth Friday night.

“I told the kids that, ‘Victory requires payment in advance,'” said Lisbon coach Dean Hall, who recited that quote prior to the MVC meet. “You have to put the time in, and they did that. This is really impressive in not the best of conditions.”

Lisbon won both meets in convincing fashion despite a damp, cold and sometimes rainy day at Lewiston High School. The girls finished with 143 points. Hall-Dale was second with 90 while Winthrop was third with 78. The Lisbon boys totaled 181 points. Hall-Dale was second with 83.50 while Madison was third with 61.

“It means a lot, especially for the coaches (Hall, Dan Sylvester, Doug Sautter, Hank Fuller),” said Rebekah Sullivan, who won the high jump and shot and took second in the discus. “It makes us want it even more. It would make coach Hall’s life absolutely amazing. We definitely had the potential and to do this well and to win it it is just wonderful for everyone.”

It is the fourth straight year that both Lisbon boys and girls teams have claimed the MVC title. That’s a feat never accomplished by another MVC school.

“Ever since the beginning of the season, we’ve been going for the big No. 4,” said Joe Doughty, who won the shot and the discus. “All season the coaches have been like, ‘You can do this. You can win.’ We’ve all been here for such a long time that it’s like a big family.”

Sophomore Tara Metzger led the Greyhounds with wins in the 200, long jump and triple jump. Jenn Caton won the pole vault while Rebekah Sullivan took first in the shot put, the high jump and the discus.

In the high jump, she didn’t even know what height she was trying to clear, but’s the way she likes it.

“I loved the fact that I didn’t know what it is,” said Sullivan. “I pretend it’s 4-2 every time. I ended up clearing 4-8, and I didn’t know until after.”

In the shot put, she says she struggled to get off a good throw until her very last try.

“I did terribly the first five throws, but the last one was everything that I had,” she said.

The girls team also got a second from Brianna Moore in the shot while Katy Fitzgerald took second in the triple jump. Sierra Guay was second in the racewalk, and Kayla Moan added a fourth in the 1,600 and a third in the 3,200.

“We had some girls really step up,” said Hall. “Kayla Moan in the 1,600 and the 3,200. She had a big day. Tara Metzger showed she’s ready for the big time as a sophomore.”

Dirigo’s Emily Chase won the 100 and took second in the 100 hurdles. Telstar’s Taylor Maines won both the 1,600 and the 3,200. Winthrop got wins from Anna Smithgall in the discus and Grace Burnett in the 400. Kenzie Hill added another win for the Ramblers by repeating in the 800.

“I put a lot of pressure on myself,” said Hill. “I had pretty much won all of my 800 races. So I was kind of nervous going in, and I didn’t really know what to expect. Everyone was like, ‘You’re the first seed and the first seed usually wins’ but that’s not always the case.”

On the first lap, Hill was caught in a crowd in the middle of the pack and broke free on the backstretch before outrunning Boothbay’s Kristin Sibley.

“It was one of my biggest goals, and I’m really happy that I got it,” said Hill. “It’s what I worked for all season.”

In the boys’ meet, Doughty took both the shot and discus. He was the top seed in the shot put and won with a distance of 40-00.

“I’d heard about what the other kids had done,” said Doughty. “I just came in with the mindset to throw as far as I could and see how it turned out.”

In the discus, he had a stiff challenge from Winthrop’s Travis Hutchins. The two traded distances for much of the competition before Doughty edge him out with a throw of 112-08.

“I started getting nervous, and I just came in threw 112,” said Doughty. “I was really nervous. I actually took up most of my time. I had only two seconds left.”

Kyle Huston added wins in the 100 and high jump and took second in the long jump. Cam Bubar won the 800 and was second in the javelin. George Clement was second in both the 110 hurdles and triple jump and added a fifth in the long jump. Tyler Campbell was second in the 1,600 while Erik Metzger was second in the 200. Morgan Reeves won the triple, took second in the pole vault and was third in the long jump.

“It’s not the greatest track weather today,” said Hall. “It’s damp and cold. It’s a problem, but we overcame all that. That’s why we practice in the rain.”

Telstar’s Frankie DelDuca was another top performer in the boys’ meet with wins in the 400 and long jump. Winthrop’s Pat Romar won the javelin.
