AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Home heating oil prices in Maine jumped four cents a gallon in the past week, and the state’s energy director is advising households to start planning for the next heating season.

The latest survey by the Governor’s Office of Energy Independence and Security found an average cash price of $2.15 a gallon. Actual prices ranged from a low of $1.86 in southwestern Maine to a high of $2.40 in northern Maine.

Energy office Director John Kerry noted that the price of crude oil has risen nearly $33 a barrel since the market’s low in February. He emphasized the need to prepare for the coming heating season through careful planning and budgeting, but stopped short of any suggestion as to whether Mainers should lock in their fuel at a fixed price.
