PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Organized labor is hoping to get support from Maine’s two senators as a bill to make it easier to organize in workplaces comes up.
The Employee Free Choice Act would not require secret ballot votes on forming a union. Workers instead would have the option of simply signing a card.
The Change That Works campaign, funded by the Service Employees International Union and other labor groups, has been holding news conferences around Maine in support of the Employee Free Choice Act.
The Portland Press Herald says Maine Republican Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins both oppose the bill. But labor supporters say they hope that Snowe especially could be persuaded to change her mind. But Snowe’s office says she has not changed her position.
