PORTLAND (AP) – Tons of herring, intended for lobster traps along the Maine coast, have been reported stolen from a Portland bait shop.

The Portland Press Herald reported that thieves stole four pallets of the bait, worth a total of $1,500, over the weekend.

Pallets contain four barrels of herring, each weighing 400 pounds.

A break-in was reported Sunday at Dropping Springs Bait on Portland’s Sturdivant Wharf.

Authorities believe burglars may have used a company forklift and made their getaway in a boat.

Dropping Springs Bait company was created by lobster fishermen, mostly from Chebeague Island, to make sure that they would have access to fish to bait their traps.
