PORTLAND — Chad Gurney, arrested in connection with the murder of Zoe Samacki in Portland last month, has been indicted by a Cumberland County grand jury on charges of intentional or knowing or depraved indifference murder and arson, both Class A felonies.

Gurney, 27, of Portland was arrested at an Old Orchard Beach motel on May 26, hours after the previous night’s blaze at Gurney’s apartment. He was located after a motorist who was stopped for a traffic violation said he was talking to Gurney by cell phone. An officer talked to Gurney and convinced him to surrender.

Gurney has been held without bail in Cumberland County Jail on murder and arson charges, and entered no plea at his initial court appearance on May 27.

Jail officials said he was under psychiatric observation.
