AUGUSTA (AP) – An effort to reduce the membership in the Maine House of Representatives appears to have run out of steam.

Up for final consideration in the House Wednesday, the proposed constitutional amendment won majority support, 89-54. But that was short of the supermajority of 101 or more votes required.

The state Senate previously registered its support. But without two-thirds in both chambers, no referendum will happen.
