Women’s Club takes awards at convention

READFIELD – The GFWC/Livermore Falls Women’s Club held a meeting recently at the Weathervane Restaurant. Muriel Bowerman read a tribute to Irma Bowles, founder and long-time member of the club.

Co-President Lucille Lavoie gave a report on the Maine Federation of Women’s Clubs state convention some members attended in Ellsworth. Several awards were given to the club at the convention, including second place for the scrapbook, which displays the club history for the year.

Claire Tanner won first place in the short story contest and the club won first place in the state conservation/beautification department. She also told about a tea held at the Blaine House in Augusta for the Women’s Legislative Council members.

Co-President Gail Slade talked about the gardening projects responsible for the club receiving its first-place award at the state convention and let those who worked on the projects choose a gift from the “Garden Basket.”

Other business included a vote on changes in bylaws. They were approved and members thanked those who worked on the committee.

The speaker for the day was Attorney John Nale, of Waterville, who specializes in elder law.

Nale presented specific steps to take in preparing for problems encountered in later years and answered questions.

The last meeting for the year will be an ice cream social and garden tour in June. Anyone wanting more information about the club is asked to call Slade at 897-2158 or Lavoie at 897-5106.
