RUMFORD – A familiar face is now providing the sacraments for the hundreds of members of the Parish of the Holy Savior.
The Rev. Alfred Jacques, 76, was officially appointed as pastor of the parish by Bishop Richard Malone on Monday. He will temporarily replace the Rev. Angelo LeVasseur, who died last week following a brief illness.
LeVasseur replaced Jacques upon his retirement in 2004. However, said Sue Bernard, spokeswoman for the Portland diocese, Jacques never really retired, but instead, has filled in for vacationing priests.
The Rev. Andrew Dubois will be temporary administrator for the local parish. He will continue to serve as the closest adviser, or moderator of the curia, to the bishop while taking on the administrative duties of the Parish of the Holy Savior.
Bernard said it is uncertain the length of time Jacques will serve the local parish. Each July, she said there is a shifting of priests, and the office of the bishop takes a look at the whole picture, which in this case, are all the parishes in the state.
She said it is unlikely that a permanent replacement will be identified in July. When a new priest is assigned, he will take on both the sacramental and business duties of the parish.
The Parish of the Holy Savior comprises St. Athanasius and St. John Church in Rumford, Our Lady of the Snows in Bethel, St. Mary Chapel in Roxbury Pond, and Holy Savior School in Rumford. The churches of St. Theresa in Mexico and St. Joseph in Dixfield were closed when the Portland diocese restructured the state’s parishes.
Jacques was born in Caribou and served several parishes before he was assigned to Rumford in 1995.
