JAY – Nearly 45 firefighters from Jay, Wilton and East Dixfield responded to a barn on fire late Monday on Old Jay Hill Road.

Livermore Falls Fire Department was on standby at its station in case more firefighters were needed.

A permitted brush fire that was thought to be out ignited the barn, Jay fire-rescue Chief Scott Shink said.

The majority of the house that now belongs to Matt Brennick had burned several years ago leaving only a small piece of the house and the attached barn, Shink said. The barn is located across from My Dad’s Place, near the intersection of Old Jay Hill Road and Routes 4 and 17.

When firefighters arrived, the barn roof was fully aflame, Shink said. But firefighters were able to put out the fire without the barn burning to the ground. The roof of the barn is now sitting on the second floor of the building, Shink said.

The building was not insured, he said
