PARIS – Troy Ripley will begin serving on the Board of Selectmen after winning election Tuesday.

Ripley earned 498 votes, while his opponent, Rick McAlister, came away with 449.

“It was a good campaign,” Ripley said. “Both of us tried to stay positive and I think we did. I look forward to doing my best for the citizens of Paris, and I appreciate their support.”

A subdivision ordinance brought to the town by a petition from a group of residents also narrowly passed, 461-441. It will replace an ordinance established in 2007 by a vote of 487-468.

The ordinance had been the subject of controversy, and in December a petition was presented to the town to consider the new ordinance as a way of improving landowner relations with the town. Changes from the former document include having one application process, instead of separate ones for major and minor subdivisions; allowing appeals to go to the Board of Appeals instead of the Superior Court; allowing subdivisions to meet town standards for gravel roads rather than paved roads; having fire protection standards be approved by the fire chief rather than meeting set requirements; and allowing the Planning Board to grant waivers.

The ordinance was passed over the recommendations of the Planning Board and selectmen, who voted against supporting it after criticism that the document would be difficult to enforce and might compromise public safety in some areas.

A working group was established in April to review possible amendments to whichever document was in place after Tuesday’s vote.

In other balloting results Tuesday, Edward Chouinard and Alvin Barth were chosen trustees for three years for the Paris Utility District, with 554 and 357 votes, respectively. Raymond Lussier garnered 307 votes in that race.

In uncontested races, Curtis Cole was elected SAD 17 director for three years with 804 votes, and Janet Jamison was elected Paris Utility District trustee for one year with 661 votes.

Voters also decided to update the flood plain ordinance, 620-275; revise a shoreland zoning ordinance, 545-336 vote; and update the dog control ordinance, 584-305.
