AUGUSTA (AP) – A package of proposed changes in Maine’s tax code is still sitting on the desk of Gov. John Baldacci, awaiting his action.
A measure that would lower the top state income tax rate and broaden application of the state sales tax was passed last week by the House and Senate.
But Baldacci has reservations about portions of the plan and it’s unclear what he will do. House and Senate votes of approval were not big enough to override a gubernatorial veto.
Legislative proponents of the measure, led by House Majority Leader John Piotti of Unity, have been meeting with the administration to discuss options.
Time is growing short. The Legislature could adjourn by the end of the week.
