WELLS – Ben Rines belted an RBI single in the sixth inning to lift Oak Hill to a 3-2 victory over Wells in a Western Class B baseball prelim Wednesday.
Rines led the Raiders (9-8) with two hits, the game’s only repeat slugger. Starter Josh Martin worked the first five innings and picked up the win. Shawn Greenier did a solid job of shutting down the Wells (11-6) offense in relief.
The Raiders will face Lincoln Academy in the quarterfinals.
Livermore Falls 13, Monmouth 3
LIVERMORE FALLS – James McLamb scattered six hits in four innings and received ample run support as Livermore Falls rolled past Monmouth, 13-3, in Western Class C preliminary baseball action Wednesday.
Willie Brown smashed a two-run home run in the fifth inning to lead the Andies and finished with three RBIs. Josh Tainter belted out three hits with three RBIs, while Ryan Jackson tallied three hits with two RBIs.
Eric Smith led the Mustangs with two hits, including a solo home run in the first inning. Roger Bachelder also belted a pair of hits for Monmouth. Derek Gray worked the first three innings and was tagged with the loss. The Andies will host Winthrop in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
Traip 1, Mt. Abram 0
MONMOUTH – Catcher Jack Donaldson ripped a sacrifice fly in the third inning to score Drew Lamoreux and give Traip a 1-0 victory over Mt. Abram in more Western Class C preliminary action.
Toby Zeigler (Traip) and Aaron McGinness (Mt. Abram) both scattered two hits in this pitcher’s duel. Zeigler struck out 17 batters in the contest, while McGinness fanned 10.
Mt. Abram was forced to utilize a few subvarsity players in the game as their senior players failed to attend.
Softball
St. Dom’s 5, Sacopee Valley 4
AUBURN – Kelsey Murphy’s RBI double in the fifth inning sent Mary Caron across the plate as St. Dom’s squeaked out a 5-4 victory over Sacopee Valley in a Western Class C preliminary softball tilt Wednesday.
The Saints (11-5) led 3-2 after three frames before Sacopee knotted things up in the fourth. Caron led the Saints with two hits and one RBI, while Heidi Nadeau, Mary Lewis and Erin Landry all tallied key singles. Alex Landry also contributed with a suicide bunt in the fourth. Lindsey Nance gave up 13 hits in seven innings to earn her 11th win of 2009.
Anna Allard led the Hawks (8-8) with three hits and two RBIs, while Alece Deleo belted out a pair of hits. Whitney Stacey hurled a complete game and suffered the loss.
The Saints will face Telstar in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
G-NG 2, York 1
YORK – Laura Getchell scattered two hits and received adequate run support as Gray-New Gloucester edged York 2-1 in a Western Class B quarterfinal.
York jumped held a 1-0 advantage until the third frame when Gray came alive. Getchell tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI single, while Rachel Clement’s single drove Taylor Damon home for the winning run. Alicia Valente also contributed for the Patriots (13-4) with a single.
Mt. Abram 6, Madison 5
MADISON – Anna McGuinness scored on a passed ball in the sixth inning as Mt. Abram edged Madison 6-5 in more preliminary softball playoff action Wednesday.
Molly McCafferty scattered seven hits in a complete game effort for the Roadrunners (11-6) to notch the win.
Lynn Bean and catcher Whitney Cowette led the Bulldogs with two hits apiece. The game was knotted at 2-2 until the fifth inning.
Oak Hill 2, Falmouth 1
WALES – Sarah Albert belted an RBI double in the seventh inning to lift Oak Hill to a 2-1 victory over Falmouth in another Western Class B prelim matchup Wednesday.
Falmouth (8-9) got the board first, taking a 1-0 advantage in the fourth frame. The Raiders (10-7) answered when Albert knocked in her first run. Katie Wood also contributed for Oak Hill with two hits.
Falmouth (8-9) stayed in contention thanks to solid pitching from starter Sarah Collmus, who went the distance. Lauren Hall struck out nine batters for Oak Hill with just one walk.
The Raiders will face Cape Elizabeth in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
Girls’ lacrosse
Cony 19, Oxford Hills 15
AUGUSTA – Macy Pagurko netted seven first-half goals, while four other players tallied more than once as Cony hustled to a 19-15 victory over Oxford Hills in Eastern Class A quarterfinal girl’s lacrosse action Wednesday.
Pagurko finished with eight goals for the Rams, while Cassie Diplock registered a hat trick. Holly Parker, Hayley Lachance, Naomi Miller and Maia Diplock all tallied twice to complete the scoring.
Ebony Mills, Lauren Brett and Heather Knight led the Vikings (5-8) with four goals each. Drew Washer also contributed with two goals, while Marisa Hanning also tallied. Mariah Kimball turned aside 22 shots for Oxford Hills.
