WILTON – Alton R. Welch, 94, of Magrath Road, Wilton, died on the evening of Sunday, June 7, at his home, surrounded by his family.

He was born in North Jay, April 7, 1915, the son of Isaac and Lizzie (Townsend) Welch. He received his education in local schools. On Feb. 27, 1937, he married M. Chrystal Frost. He worked in several area shoe shops and as a supervisor at G.H. Bass before retiring in 1980.

He was a long-time member of the First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ in Wilton and he enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and traveling. He was known for being handy and made many stools and cabinets, and had even built his own home. He was a former member of the Franklin Grange.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Chrystal, of Wilton; two sons, Herschel Welch and his wife, Lauristine, of Jay, and Hartley Welch and his wife, Tena, of Raymond; a brother, Thornal Welch of Wilton; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by three brothers; two sisters; and his son Herman in 1971.
