HARRISON – A Naples man was killed and another was injured Wednesday night after a minivan slammed into a trees on Edes Falls Road and burst into flames, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said.
Joshua R. Babbitt of Edes Falls Road died when the 1996 Dodge Caravan he was driving south toward Naples crossed the road, struck several trees and burst into flames, the agency said in a statement late Wednesday. Babbitt was the only occupant.
The accident occurred at about 7:15 p.m.
Ronald Lemieux, who knew Babbitt and was following him in another vehicle, dragged Babbitt from the burning wreckage to a safe distance and tried unsuccessfully to revive him, according to investigators. Babbitt was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lemieux suffered minor smoke inhalation and was taken by ambulance to Bridgton Hospital, according to the statement.
The owner of the minivan was not being released, Lt. Thomas Williams said, due to an ongoing investigation by Detective Sgt. Jim Estabrook and an accident reconstruction team.
Police remained at the scene for hours after the van crashed. It was not immediately clear whether Babbitt had passengers.
The wreck closed the road for hours as rescue crews responded and police began an investigation, which was expected to continue into Thursday.
