AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — A bill that sets a goal of weatherizing all Maine homes and half of its businesses by 2030 has been signed into law.

Gov. John Baldacci on Friday called the law “a significant and bold” step as he signed it. He said the law sets aggressive goals to end Maine’s dependency on foreign fuels.

The law creates an Efficiency Maine Trust and Board that brings under one roof Maine’s energy rebate, efficiency and conservation programs. The board will design weatherization and alternative energy programs for all energy consumers in Maine.

Besides setting weatherization goals, the law sets a goal of reducing peak electric energy consumption by 100 megawatts by 2020 and reducing Maine’s consumption of liquid fossil fuels by at least 30 percent by 2030.
