AUBURN – TD Banknorth officials said Friday they will make an announcement Monday about an expansion here that “reflects TD Banknorth’s commitment to the region and the state.”

Gov. John Baldacci, U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, bank executives and Twin Cities officials are scheduled to attend the announcement, set to take place before invited guests and the media at 9:30 a.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn.

“We are excited about the opportunity to strengthen our relationship with the community and provide superior banking service to our customers,” said Bharat Masrani, president and CEO of TD Bank.

The company, through a spokeswoman, declined to provide any more details about the announcement.

At the beginning of the year, TD Banknorth Maine Market President Larry Wold announced the company needed two operations centers and “one of those will always be in this market.”

The future of the once locally based bank, which employs 1,100 people in Androscoggin County, had been in question after TD Banknorth Financial Group bought New Jersey-based Commerce Bank in 2007 and announced intentions to merge back-office operations.

When Wold confirmed the bank’s desire to stay in Lewiston-Auburn, he also acknowledged the company was considering the option of expanding in the area. “There are opportunities to grow within the Bates Mill and in greater Lewiston-Auburn,” he said at the time.
