ELLSWORTH (AP) – The Maine Supreme Judicial Court has upheld the convictions and sentences of a man and woman from Mount Desert Island who were convicted two years ago of raping at least two women.

Fifty-one-year-old Peter Mills and 47-year-old Stephanie Stark were each convicted of gross sexual assault in two separate incidents over a three-day period in 2005. During the trial, victims testified they believed they were given wine laced with drugs before they were assaulted.

Mills was sentenced to 10 years, while Stark was sentenced to seven years.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the supreme court ruled Thursday that Justice William Brodrick did not err when he presided over Mills’ and Stark’s trial in Penobscot County Superior Court.

Attorneys representing Mills and Stark argued that the defendants should have been tried separately and that the sentences were unfairly long.
