PORTLAND (AP) – The Portland Police Department is testing out some new sets of wheels.
The department has a two-wheel Segway and a three-wheel T3 – electric vehicles that officers stand up on while rolling through the city.
Police Chief James Craig told the Portland Press Herald that the vehicles are modern-day versions of riding a horse. He said they can go places that police cars can’t, without sacrificing the interpersonal contact of a foot beat.
Craig said the vehicles are on loan to the department for a trial period while officers evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each model.
