AUBURN – Christie Thurston Knight, 89, died Saturday, June 13, at the Hospice House in Auburn. She was a resident of Rumford since the early ’40s.
She was born on Nov. 26, 1919, in Bethel, to Wade H. and Kathryn Day Thurston.
She attended Bethel schools, graduated from Gould Academy in 1938, and attended Northeastern Business College in Portland.
She married Edwin R. Knight of Rumford Point on June 7, 1941, in Norway. He died on July 25, 1974.
Christie was employed as a bookkeeper by the L. E. Davis Lumber Co. in Bethel. After moving to Rumford, she was employed in the Rumford School Department Superintendent’s Office for one year.
She served as deputy town clerk/treasurer and later as town clerk/treasurer in Rumford, retiring in 1984.
Christie volunteered at the Rumford Community Hospital Coffee Shop, Rumford Elementary School Library, and at Black Mountain of Maine ski area. She enjoyed visiting and traveling with family and friends, as well as knitting, swimming and walking.
She is survived by a son, Jeffrey Knight and wife, Susan, of Dixfield; three daughters, Nancy Godsil and husband, Patrick, of Arvada, Colo., Kathryn Grande and husband, Gerard, of Pound Ridge, N.Y., and Marsha Bannon and husband, Scott, of Torrance, Calif.; eight grandchildren, Scott Godsil and wife, Heidi, of Nederland, Colo., Stephen Godsil and wife, JoAnn, of Arvada, Colo., Christopher Knight of Rumford, Cory Lowe of Snowmass, Colo., Brett and Erica Bannon of Torrance, Calif., April Grande of Stamford, Conn., Josh Roy and wife, Kristen, of Greenwich, Conn.; and six great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a brother, Floyd Thurston, of Bethel; sisters, Mary Rice of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Josephine Parker of Westbrook.
