JAY – Teens are invited to “Express Yourself @ Your Library” by participating in the Jay-Niles Memorial Library first teen summer reading program from June 18 to July 31.
Teens in middle school and high school may register for the program starting at noon Thursday, June 18. At 2 p.m. graphic novelist, Jay Piscopo, will kick off the program.
The library has copies of two of his graphic novels: “The Undersea Adventures of Capt’N Eli: the Mystery of Me” and “The Undersea Adventures of Capt’N Eli: the Mystery of the Sargasso Sea.”
Piscopo will share his work and present a workshop. He invites teens to try their hand at cartoon art.
Throughout the summer teens are invited to come to the library and read for prizes as well as to take part in the special events. For every five hours of reading, teens will be able to put their name into a drawing for an Ipod Touch.
The biggest event of the summer will be a concert by the band, High Strung, at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 2.
For the past few years, the Detroit band has been performing for teens at libraries around the country.
Other programs will include scrapbooking, espresso art, karaoke night, movie night, Wii game time, coffee house/talent night and a murder mystery party/closing program.
Teens should visit the library to register and get an event calendar and reading log. They may sign up anytime within the next three weeks.
There will also be an ongoing photography and art exhibit. Teen works of art will be displayed around the library.
