BUCKFIELD – Selectmen were told Tuesday night that the annual town meeting warrant has the wrong date and time, but it can be corrected when the session opens at 9 a.m. Saturday at Buckfield High School.
Town Manager Glen Holmes said he checked with the Maine Municipal Association on the legality of fixing the error and was told it could be done at the meeting June 20. He said there will be an insert to replace the first paragraph in the warrant.
Holmes advised that the proposed budget for 2009-10 is of $38,116.83 less than this year and the tax rate is expected to be $19.35 per thousand dollars of assessed property value.
One warrant article asks the town to authorize the purchase of the leased backhoe and borrowing up to $67,100 to pay for it.
There are five ordinances to be enacted: Fire Chief Selection, Key Lock Box, Entrance/Driveway, Shoreland Zoning and Flood Plain Management.
The board made no decision on an offer by beekeeper Tony Bachelder to buy Bessey Memorial Field and move the lights to another town ball field. Bachelder has said the lights on the Paris Hill Road field threaten his business, one of the largest in the state with up to 800 hives.
He offered the town $50,000 for the field and relocation of its lights for nighttime games.
Holmes told selectmen this week that if Bessey field is sold, the town could use the money to revamp the municipal playing field, the recreation field or one of the school fields.
Appointments to the Recreation Committee and Planning Board were tabled until July 6.
