AUGUSTA (AP) – Maine Republican Party Chairman Charles Webster says he’s ready to take a first step toward overturning parts of the state’s recently enacted tax code overhaul.

Webster said Tuesday it’s not clear yet what sort of coalition, if any, would line up to participate in such a referendum campaign. But he said he expects talks in coming days to flesh that out.

Webster said a people’s veto would not seek to undo a reduction in the top state income tax rate.

The tax code overhaul also broadens the sale tax to include such items as car repairs and increases the meals and lodging tax from 7 percent to 8.5 percent.
