100 years ago, 1909

Residents on Turner Street, Auburn, are complaining about the manner in which automobiles are speeding along there this spring. Some say that it is a noticeable fact that the machines are driven faster there than on most streets in the city. As there are a great
many cross streets it is accordingly very dangerous.


50 years ago, 1959

Mrs. Hortense Stevens, Androscoggin County humane agent, has a four-week-old puppy which was fished out of Taylor Brook yesterday by a child and taken to the K-9 Shangri-La Shelter by Auburn police. Mrs. Stevens said the puppy was one of a litter of five which apparently had been thrown into the brook Monday. The bodies of the other four puppies were also found. The humane agent said the youngster had heard the one puppy whimpering and went to investigate. He brought the puppy to Auburn police headquarters and then to the shelter.


25 years ago, 1984

Despite the onslaught of wet May weather, many Lewiston homeowners decided to build swimming pools and sun decks for the hotter summer months. Lewiston’s Department of Code Enforcement issued 13 permits for swimming pools and many more permits for sun decks during May. The department issued a total of 152 permits with a combined value of $1,219,879.
While the number of permits is up from the 122 issued in April, the dollar value is down. Due to industrial expansions, permits valued at $1.4 million were issued in April.
