DIXFIELD – Vandals are continuing to steal or destroy flowers and other items people place on the gravestones in the Greenwood Cemetery, police said.
Dixfield police Sgt. Jeff Howe said the continued vandalism has prompted the department to to target the Pine Street and Weld Street area by assigning more surveillance.
“Most of the incidents are happening in the new section, which borders Pine Street,” he said Tuesday afternoon.
In the past week, someone or some group had taken two handmade flower guards, a number of real flowers, and a bronze marker from several graves.
Last week, reports came in of the theft of both planted and artificial flowers, and several bronze markers including those that identify veterans’ graves.
“We’re still getting random hits,” he said.
He said such violations are criminal mischief, and if those responsible enter the cemetery after dark it is criminal trespass. Such violations are subject to fines of at least $300 and responsibility to pay for damages.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Police Department at 562-4517.
