NORWAY – The summer reading program at Norway Memorial Library will kick off from noon to 2 p.m. Monday, June 22, at the Guy E. Rowe School. Families will be able to register for the summer reading program, Norway swim program, LOOK program and other children’s programs.

The reading program theme will be “Be Creative @ Your Library,” and children will be encouraged to explore their creativity at several imagination stations, including kazoo-making, creating postcards from a dream vacation, collaborative storytelling, face painting and fun with Celebration Barn Theater.

The program is designed to help students maintain their reading skills over the summer vacation. Students who register for the program will read books of their choice and keep track of the time they read. Prizes will be awarded at several reading milestones.

Children who are not yet reading on their own (generally ages 0 to 6) can join the “Read to Me” group. The children will be asked to listen to books over the summer to develop their listening skills and help prepare them for learning to read on their own.

Children who are starting to read on their own may do a combination of reading aloud and listening to books being read aloud or on tape/CD.

School-age children may also register for activities at the library on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from June 23 to Aug. 11. Tuesdays will be geared toward independent readers, entering grades two to six, with book sharing, crafts and games, all with an arts theme.

Thursdays will be for children entering grades one to six and will feature guest artists from the community, including Nettie and Hannah Gentempo, dance; Katey Branch, theater games; Nikki Millonzi, making a mural; Lisa Moore, WordPlay; David Knightly, Mexican musical fun; Nancy Grigg, creative quilting; and Brittany Brown, Native American arts.

Activities fill quickly on a first-come, first-served basis, with registration beginning at the kickoff on June 22.
