AUGUSTA (AP) – Carbon monoxide poisoning is generally associated with the use of gas-powered generators during power outages. But the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention is warning camp owners about the hazard, as well.

Maine’s CDC urged camp owners to make sure propane-fueled stoves and refrigerators are operating properly when turned on for the season.

Dr. Andrew Smith, state toxicologist, said there were several instances last spring of family members being exposed to high levels of carbon monoxide because of gas-fueled appliances. Already, state officials are investigating two camp-related incidents this spring.

Each year, there are more than 100 emergency department admissions in Maine because of carbon monoxide poisoning.
