WALES – What do you get when you mix a cop, a few bar workers, some local businessmen, a city worker or two and a group of former Boston Red Sox pros?

Probably some strange arguments over calls at the plate. But more importantly, you get a charity event aimed at scoring money to feed the elderly.

A bout between former Sox legends and a team made up of locals Saturday is shooting to round up donations for the Loaves and Fishes food pantry.

On one side of the diamond will be names Sox fans will recognize, Bob Stanley, Sam Horn, Rick Miller and Jim Corsi among them.

On the other side, Sabattus police Officer Matt Prince will take the field with help from four people from Mixers, four seasoned players from the Sabattus Rec Softball League and a smattering of local businesspeople.

“We should be in pretty good shape,” said Kathy Irazzary, of T-Design & Embroidery, who helped organize the event in its second year.

Irazzary is good at rounding up players and getting the word out. But can she hit?

“Last year, I hit the ball and the hit came straight down and hit me on the bridge of the nose,” she said.

It happens to all baseball players. Except maybe those who played professionally, like Stanley who pitched and stayed out of the batter’s box. And Miller, a Gold Glove winner who played for the Sox in their hard-luck years in the 1970s.

“They’re good guys,” Irazzary said of the seven former Sox who will be there. “It’s like, wow. This is big for us.”

The event will feature play-by-play color over the loudspeaker, lest anyone forget which players are locals and which are former professionals. Irazzary is so excited, she’s not even worried about further trauma to her nose.

“It’s going to be a blast,” she said.
