AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine Republican Party Chairman Charles Webster says he’s taking a first step toward what he hopes will be the overturning of parts of the state’s recently enacted tax code overhaul.

Webster said Thursday he’s still not sure what sort of organization will form behind a people’s veto effort. But Webster said he was going ahead with filing the necessary paperwork with state election officials in advance of a petition drive.

Webster said earlier this week that a people’s veto would not seek to undo a pending reduction in the top state income tax rate.

The tax code overhaul also broadens the sale tax and increases the meals and lodging tax.
